The Illinois Prison Project works for a more humane prison system in Illinois by fighting for and on behalf of thousands of people who are needlessly incarcerated. We provide direct representation to elderly people, disabled and infirm people, and people who have been rehabilitated after substantial periods of incarceration.

Tewkunzi Green

Tewkunzi Green is a survivor of domestic violence. In an act of self defense, she killed her partner, who was strangling her as she held her six-month-old son. Sentenced to 34 years in prison, Governor J.B. Prtizker commuted Tewkunzi's sentence in November 2020 after serving 13 years. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Tewkunzi created these moving pieces to uplift the need to free all incarcerated survivors of gender-based violence.
